Mongolia’s AI Development Landscape
Mongolia has reached a critical macroeconomic inflection point. As the nation seeks to diversify its economy away from an overreliance on the extractive sector, where mining currently accounts for 95.4 percent of export revenue, artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as the primary engine driving this essential transition. Mongolia attained a very high status in the UN E-Government Development Index (EGDI) for 2024, positioning itself among the top five landlocked nations. However, a significant gap persists between administrative digitization and true AI readiness. While digital infrastructure represents a national strength, the technology sector remains a distinct weakness due to the scarcity of AI-focused startups and limited access to risk capital.
